Public Input Sought On Preliminary Plans for Rail Trail Connecting Midtown Neighborhood to the Stockade District in Uptown Kingston

KINGSTON, NY – Acting County Executive Adele B. Reiter is pleased to announce a Public Informational Meeting to discuss the Ulster County Midtown Linear Park Project in the City of Kingston. This proposed project will construct a pedestrian and bicycle path between Cornell Street and Westbrook Lane along the County’s abandoned railroad corridor.

Local officials, residents and businesses are encouraged to attend the meeting on Wednesday, March 20, 2019 at 7:00 p.m. at the Restorative Justice and Community Empowerment Center located at 733 Broadway in Kingston.  The County’s engineering consultants, HVEA Engineers, will make a presentation highlighting preliminary plans for the approximately 0.8-mile rail trail project, which will serve as an important pedestrian and bicycle link between the Midtown neighborhood and Uptown Kingston. In 2016, the County received a grant award of $1.5 million in federal transportation funding to fund the project, which was followed in 2018 by an additional $1.0 million in funding through the Community Foundations of the Hudson Valley.  Following the presentation, the Planning Department will solicit public input on the preliminary trail design.

The Project builds upon the County’s efforts to develop an interconnected rail trail system throughout Ulster County. The Midtown Linear Park is also part of the Kingston Greenline, a joint initiative of the Kingston Land Trust, City of Kingston and Ulster County to develop a system of trails, linear parks, and complete streets within the City of Kingston.
