Ulster County Continues To Lead The Way In Environmental Stewardship And Has Been Awarded A $500,000 Energy Efficiency Grant From Central Hudson

The Grant Will Be Used To Upgrade Lighting Systems In County Buildings, Reducing Power Usage And Saving Taxpayers Money

Kingston, N.Y. — Ulster County Executive Mike Hein announced today the award of an energy efficiency grant worth over $500,000 from Central Hudson.  The grants will provide for the installation of high efficiency LED lighting systems at county facilities which will conserve 632,754 kWh of electricity each year, which translates into an annual savings of over $82,000 for taxpayers. 

“I am proud of what we have accomplished in Ulster County; but our work is not done,” said County Executive Mike Hein.  “Already, 100% of our electricity comes from renewable sources and we are the only net carbon neutral county government in New York State.  Now with this efficiency grant, we can replace inefficient lighting systems throughout county facilities and reduce our carbon footprint even further.  In addition to the environmental benefit, we will save over $82,000 a year going forward which will benefit our taxpayers.  We expect to complete the work this year.”

“The County Executive has placed a top priority on helping our environment while simultaneously protecting taxpayers,” said Amanda LaValle, Coordinator, Ulster County Department of the Environment.  “Even though the County already purchases all of its electric from renewable sources, it is still important to reduce energy consumption.  This grant not only allows us to significantly reduce our lighting energy consumption but also reduces costs and expenses.”

The Central Hudson grant, which totals $517,125.00, covers the entire cost of the purchase of the LED lighting systems, as well as the installation which will be done by GreenLeaf Energy at thirteen county locations including the County Office Building and the Ulster County Law Enforcement Center.  The electricity saved by the upgrades is the equivalent to the amount of electricity used by 60 residential homes in a year.
