The Ulster County Office Building Will Be Lit Blue For The Month Of April
Kingston, NY - Ulster County Executive Mike Hein announces that Ulster County will recognize Autism Awareness Day by lighting the Ulster County Office Building at 244 Fair Street in Kingston and the cupola at at 1 Pearl Street in Kingston with blue lighting for the month of April to highlight World Autism Awareness Day on April 2nd and National Autism Awareness Month. Every year thousands of landmarks, schools, businesses and homes unite by shining blue lights in honor of the millions of individuals and families affected by autism.
“More than 3.5 million Americans live with an autism spectrum disorder according to the Autism Society,” said County Executive Mike Hein. “It is important to highlight autism in order to raise awareness and understanding, and consider how to best assist families who are working to serve their children. It is also an opportunity to recognize the unique talents and skills of those children and adults living with autism spectrum disorder. Lighting the County building blue is one small way we can honor those in our community who have autism as well as those who are living and working with autism on a daily basis.”
Dr. Carol Smith, Commissioner of Health & Mental Health
"The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has reported that 1 in every 68 children in our nation is born with Autism Spectrum Disorder, or ASD as it is known. This presents children with ASD and their families with significant lifetime challenges and costs. In Ulster County, it is important to us to increase awareness, acceptance and appreciation of those with ASD, and to best support them and those who care for them," said Dr. Carol Smith, Ulster County Commissioner of Health and Mental Health.
